on the Web ...Volunteer Diana Foss, a regular on the Tuesday San Jose Team, has a very active blog at dianafoss.com/blog on her many diverse interests, including entertaining stories and pictures of Village Harvest events. Where else could you find musings on sheep, fruit, Village Harvest, and elephant seals on the same page?
Village Harvest was among several local organizations featured in a 10 minute film on local Silicon Valley Food for the Food and Society Conference 2009, along with an interview with VH founder Joni Diserens. Both the video and interview are available through the home page www.villageharvest.org .
Village Harvest is now on Twitter as user villageharvest , which we'll be using for short bits of news, requests for help, and last minute harvest information. If you have a Twitter account, please "follow" villageharvest and send us interesting items as Twitter replies (@villageharvest). Unlike some of you, we're new to Twitter - so feel free to suggest how we can use it to make Village Harvest better and more fun.
Twitter? It's the hot information service for communicating and sharing information with friends (and friendly organizations), in short text messages that can be sent and received on a cell phone, smart phone, or computer. Free at www.twitter.com .
VH also has a starter Facebook page up ... but we could use help keeping that active. Any interest from experienced Facebook fans?
We need more volunteers for a harvest starting in Mountain View on Sunday morning, May 24, 9 am - 12:30. Yes, that's Memorial Day weekend - have fun while picking fruit with other interesting people and making an immediate, satisfying difference. To volunteer, follow the instructions below in this newsletter's Events Calendar (or on the web site).
The busy summer fruit season is coming, with the progression of Cherries, Apricots, Plums, Apples, Pears and more! We need more volunteers who can help informally lead at events through the summer, and also additional volunteers qualified to drive a van. We usually have many new groups and volunteers, so experienced hands are really helpful. Occasional harvests, usually a weekend morning, no long term commitment is required (but if you get hooked we're not going to complain).
If you're an experienced VH volunteer willing to step up at an occasional event, or a new volunteer willing to dive in, please contact Craig (craig@villageharvest.org).
We're continuing to blow past our previous records, on a pace for over 160,000 lbs this year if nature cooperates with our summer fruit. Wow! Our best year so far was 125,000 lbs.
How 'bout this for a
crazy idea - harvesting a total of 1 Million lbs of fruit by Village Harvest's 10th birthday. (We've harvested 730,428 lbs already, and VH recently turned 8).
