HARVESTING FOR THE HUNGRY - APRICOTS! 

There is a huge bumper crop of apricots (and plums) this year.  Last year -- famine. This year -- feast!  YEA!

Most of the apricots are Blenheims -- the most delicious, tree ripened apricot that are hard to find in the stores.  They are just too soft and perishable when ripe.  We will be Harvesting for the Hungry in our community but there is always apricots that are too ripe right now to make it through distribution.  So come with small boxes and baskets to enjoy your apricots at home.  Families with children are welcome during this time.

We have twice as many orchards this year that we'll be harvesting with your help.  RSVP to joni@villageharvest.org with the dates you plan on joining in and we'll send you the details on each harvest.

We have another apricot orchard in Palo Alto & a plum orchard in Santa Cruz that we'll probably be harvesting.  Stay tuned!

Instructions for harvesting volunteers:

  • Dress in layers for a cool morning, warming during the day, and cooling in the evening with sun protection, and insect repellant in mind.
  • Wear comfortable, covered shoes.
  • Please carpool as parking is limited at all locations.  Please let us know if you have a truck or SUV to help carry fruit.
  • Bring a small box or bag to share in the harvest. Tree-ripened fruit from Santa Clara Valley... it doesn't get any better than this!
  • Children, 7 and over are welcome but please see our Volunteer FAQ's for more information.

JAMMIN' TEAM - APRICOT, PEACHES AND PLUMS

With this bumper crop of fruit, we also want to "put up" as much as possible to enjoy later.  Our preserves are in high demand and we never seem to be able to make enough.  Perhaps with your help, this will be the year!

Starting Saturday, June 23rd, we're planning to make preserves Tuesday and Saturday afternoons in our loaned kitchen in Palo Alto.  If you'd like to join in, please RSVP to joni@villageharvest.org with specific dates in mind and we'll send you the details.  Children must be high school age and above.  All experience levels welcome.

Remember that the best tasting, tree ripened fruit goes home with the volunteers, as it will be too ripe to go through distribution at the various agencies.  Perfect for people who like to make preserves. All dates subject to change based upon ripening and weather.
