VILLAGE HARVEST ON KQED - TODAY!

Tune in to KQED 88.5FM at for the weekly California Report newsmagazine , Friday, August 25th at 4:30, 6:30 & 11pm.
Village Harvest is going to be featured in a 5+ minute segment.

Over the past few weeks, a reporter from National Public Radio has been recording Village Harvest events for the California Report news magazine.  They followed our San Jose team through an entire harvest from beginning to when the pantry recipients received the fruit and recorded a jammin' session too.  As they put together the feature they loved it so much that they decided to have it run longer than planned.  In the feature you might hear some folks that you know:  Village Harvest volunteers - Bill Young, Heather Dooley, Diana Foss, Ellen Rosenberg, Pat Turner, John Turner, Kirsten Precoda, Joan & Craig Ferguson, Keith Wohlberg, and Joni Diserens.  Also, included are Village Harvest homeowners, Salvation Army partners and pantry recipients.

If you miss the broadcasts, you can listen to it on the web at http://www.californiareport.org/domains/californiareport/index.jsp.

It will be broadcast all over California on NPR affiliate stations.  To find out the station and channel to tell your friends, check the website at:  http://www.californiareport.org/domains/californiareport/tune-in.jsp

HARVESTING FOR THE HUNGRY - PEARS:

There is a bumper crop of pears this year in one of the orchards in the Santa Cruz Hills.  The owner says that she usually gets 2000 lbs.  We've already harvested that and have only harvested 1/4 of the orchard so far.  So this is an urgent call for help to bring in this bumper crop for the hungry.

For this harvest we need a lot of harvesters and truck/van drivers.

Sunday, August 27th **
8:30am - Meet at Mountain View CSA, 204 Stierlin Road, Mountain View to carpool.
9:15am - 12:30pm  Meet at pear orchard and harvest.
**
Only if we have enough people.  Please RSVP before coming and we will confirm details.

Tuesday, August 29th
8:30am - Meet at Salvation Army, 359 N. 4th Street to carpool.
9:15am - 12:30pm  Meet at pear orchard & harvest.

RSVP to joni@villageharvest.org if you plan on joining in.

Instructions for harvesting volunteers:

  • Dress in layers for a warm day, with sun protection, and insect repellant in mind.
  • Wear comfortable, covered shoes.
  • Come prepared to carpool.  Please let us know if you have a truck or SUV to help carry fruit.
  • Bring a small box or bag to share in the harvest. Tree ripened fruit from Santa Clara Valley... it doesn't get any better than this!
  • Children 12 and over are welcome but please see our Volunteer FAQ's for more information.

VILLAGE HARVEST TO DATE & IN THE NEWS!        71,800 lbs!

We made it through one of the worst summer fruit seasons in memory and we're still keeping up with last year's record breaking pace.  We're hoping that the pear orchard are a good indication for the apple season to come as many agencies are on a waiting list to receive fruit from Village Harvest.

We've had terrific response to the recent press (with more today and to come) and Village Harvest is once again outstripping our growth plans for this year.  To keep up, we're in need of harvesting team leaders, strategic thinkers and donations.  Come play a leading role in a successful, growing venture!

Cheers,
