APPLES FOR THE HUNGRY - SANTA CLARA (BAREC)

A large orchard of apples (200+ trees!) in Santa Clara have been donated to the Second Harvest Food Bank if we can get them harvested.  This is a large undertaking and there are several harvesting events.  These apples are "organic" by neglect but are still producing extremely well.  Please RSVP if you plan to attend for instructions on where to park and meet.

The Bay Area Research Extension Center (BAREC), used to be home to UC Agriculture research and the Master Gardeners.  For many years it has provided invaluable research to farmers and home gardeners alike on drought tolerant varieties, vegetable crops, effects of live oak irrigation, compost studies and more...  This parcel is in transition and this apple harvest is a chance to say "thank you" for all this land has given and continues to give to our community.

Thank you to Santa Clara County Supervisor Jim Beall's office for obtaining access to BAREC for harvesting.

Instructions for harvesting volunteers:
  • Dress in layers with long sleeves and comfortable shoes... Long sleeves are to protect your arms from branches.
  • Bring gloves as the fruit is dusty.
  • Please carpool.  Parking is limited.
  • Feel free to bring a bag/box to take home fruit for yourself. Tree ripened fruit from Santa Clara Valley... it doesn't get any better than this!
  • See our Volunteer FAQ's for more information, especially regarding children.
