NEW VILLAGE HARVEST TEAM IN MT. VIEW:

A new regular Village Harvest team is starting at the Mt. View Community Services Agency.  Karen Hurst will be leading this team that will meet every 2nd and 4th Sunday mornings starting in June.

If you are interested in joining a small group of folks, picking fruit for fun and exercise, on Sunday mornings in Mt. View, let us know.  The team plans to be out for 2-3 hours, picking 1-3 homes depending upon size and finishing by noon.  The fruit will be donated to Mt. View CSA's brown bag program and of course, you're welcome to take fruit for yourself.  Contact karen@villageharvest.org to sign up.

Instructions for harvesting volunteers:

  • Dress in layers with long sleeves and comfortable shoes... Long sleeves are to protect your arms from branches.
  • Bring gloves and hand pruners.
  • Be prepared to drive or carpool... If you have a large car or truck, it's always appreciated
  • Feel free to bring a bag/box to take home fruit for yourself. Tree ripened fruit from Santa Clara Valley... it doesn't get any better than this!
  • See our Volunteer FAQ's for more information, especially regarding children.

HARVESTING FOR THE HUNGRY, MT. VIEW - 5/23

Village Harvest is partnering with Mountain View Community Services Agency and Congregation Beth Am to harvest fruit grown in nearby backyards to feed the hungry.  We will be harvesting late season citrus.

Sunday, May 23rd
10:30 am - 3:30pm
Mountain View Community Services Agency
204 Stierlin Rd., Mountain View

Please RSVP to jenne@villageharvest.org if you will be joining us so we know how many homes to commit to.  Please bring a lunch as we will be picnicking in the park before returning to Mt. View CSA to finish unloading and the big weigh-in.  The Master Gardener Crazy for Citrus cookbook and Village Harvest preserves will also be available for sale.  If you'd like a specific flavor, check the web-site and place an order.

MASON JARS HELP WOMEN OF AFGHANISTAN:

Do you have some extra mason/canning jars that are looking for a good home?

Village Harvest volunteer, Rosemary Stasek, is looking for mason/canning jars for a preserving project for women in Afghanistan.  She will be teaching them modern preserving practices so that they can start their own small businesses with the help of a micro-loan program.  Your donations are tax-deductible as a donation to "a little help...".    See http://www.stasek.com/alittlehelp/

This preserving project directly helps the women of Afghanistan be more independent, now that they can work again, and encourages growing of food, not drugs.

Especially needed are smaller jars in 1/2 pints or pints.  If you have metal rings, even rusty ones, they help to protect the rims of the jars during shipping.  Jars need to be mason/canning jars because everything gets reused in Afghanistan.

If you have jars & rings to send into the world to do more good than they would in your garage, contact rosemary@stasek.com

VILLAGE HARVEST TO DATE:        34,185 lbs!

1370 lbs!  1120 lbs!  Those are our single tree records so far for this year.  They are both grapefruit trees with delicious fruit.  Those trees could feed a small...  uh...  village.

We're nearly 35k lbs for the year!  Amazing work.  Thank you all!
