From December through May, that's us! An overwhelming majority of what Village Harvest picks for the hungry is citrus. Crazy for Citrus also describes the Santa Clara County Master Gardeners who have just compiled a luscious cookbook full of their favorite orange, lemons, kumquat, ... recipes. This cookbook is for you if you've ever wondered what else you can do with the fruit that you've wanted to try from various VH events.
Look for the cookbooks on:
Saturday, April 24th, Spring in Guadalupe Gardens, San Jose
Columbus
Park, corner of Taylor & Spring, 9am -3pm
(also look
for heirloom tomato and pepper seedlings for sale by the Master Gardeners)
Crazy for Citrus cookbooks will also be available for sale at Village Harvest events; at the Master Gardener Office at 700 Empey Way, San Jose; or call the MG hotline at (408) 299-2638.
On Sunday, April 25th, we'll be harvesting citrus with the Valley of Heart's Delight. Oranges, Grapefruit, and Lemons are on the schedule. We'll be building community, sharing the bounty with those in need right in the Palo Alto area, and reducing waste. Please RSVP if you will be joining us so we know how many homes to commit to.
Sunday, April 25th
12:30pm - 5:00pm
Valley of Heart's Delight, Foundation for Global Community
222 High St, Palo Alto
We'll be finished picking, packing and enjoying refreshments by 5 p.m. If you have a truck we can either borrow or that you would be willing to drive for the event, please let us know. We could use help with carrying equipment and fruit.
Instructions for harvesting volunteers:
VILLAGE HARVEST TO DATE: 21,761 lbs!
On March 28th, Volunteers set a new weekend backyard harvesting record of 3401 lbs! Oranges, grapefruit, lemons, tangerines, and tangelos were then split between the Mt. View CSA and Second Harvest Food Bank. Laura Schuster, Mt. View CSA Food and Nutrition Programs Director, was so pleased. "March is Nutrition Month and I've been educating our clients to include more fruit and vegetables in their diet. It was so nice to walk in this morning and see TWO THOUSAND POUNDS of citrus! Please extend my thanks to the crew for all of their dedication and help!" The fruit was fully distributed within 4 days.
