HARVESTING FOR THE HUNGRY, Palo Alto, Saturday November 6:

On Saturday, November 6th, we'll be harvesting persimmons and citrus with the Valley of Heart's Delight.  Mostly Hachiya Persimmons and some oranges are on the schedule.  We'll be building community, sharing the bounty with those in need right in the Palo Alto area, while reducing waste.

Saturday, November 6th
8:30am - 12:30pm
Valley of Heart's Delight, Foundation for Global Community
222 High St, Palo Alto

We still need quite a number of volunteers still for this event.  Please plan on joining in & RSVP so we can inform you of our plans in the case of rain.

Instructions for harvesting volunteers:

  • Dress in layers with long sleeves and comfortable shoes... Long sleeves are to protect your arms from branches.
  • Bring gloves and hand pruners.
  • Be prepared to drive or carpool... If you have a large car or truck, it's always appreciated
  • Feel free to bring a bag/box to take home fruit for yourself. Tree ripened fruit from Santa Clara Valley... it doesn't get any better than this!
  • See our Volunteer FAQ's for more information, especially regarding children.

PERSIMMON HARVEST FOR THE HUNGRY, Mountain View, Sunday, November 14:

Leadership Mountain View will be teaming with Village Harvest to pick persimmon orchard in the Santa Cruz Hills for the Mt. View Community Services Agency.  There are both Hachiya and Fuyu Persimmons at this orchard and the timing is perfect to have both fruit ripe for Thanksgiving.  This will be the first time in many years that this persimmon orchard will be harvested.

Sunday, November 14th
8:30am - 12:30pm
Mountain View Community Services Agency
204 Stierlin Road, Mountain View

We'll be meeting at the Mt. View CSA and carpooling to the orchard as parking is limited.  If you're coming from South, we have an alternate meeting place.  Please specify your preference when you RSVP.  See volunteer instructions above.

HELP AND ITEMS NEEDED:

Village Harvest is continuing to grow our base of volunteers, homeowners, and communities.  Because of this, there are some help and items that we urgently need.  Contact joni@villageharvest.org if you can help with any of the following needs.

Items Needed:

Storage Space:    Want:  10'x10'  Need:  5'x10' minimum enclosed storage.
To equip new teams we need more harvesting equipment.  We have some funds for the equipment but don't have the space to store it in when it comes in.

Packaging peanuts & large bubble wrap for Packing/Shipping Jams:
After evaluating our packaging alternatives, we've determined the best design for the environment and preventing breakage is to use reused packaging material.  If you have peanuts or bubble wrap, let us reuse it before it's recycled.

Volunteers Needed:

Preserve Packaging & Sales:    1/2 day
Packaging:  During the holiday season, we have a number of orders for gift baskets and boxes.  If you have a creative flair for wrapping & packaging, please identify yourself.  Flexible schedule.
Sales:  During the holiday season VH participates a number of holiday shopping boutiques.  These both good for fund raising, education and publicity.  The events occur on both weekends as well as weekdays.  Schedule TBD.

Weekday Harvesters:    3/4 day a week (preferably Tuesdays)
The VH team that operates out of the Second Harvest Food Bank team has consistently been the most productive team.  It's a terrific group that makes a tremendous difference and the Food Bank has started to count on this team.  We'd love for a few more folks to join in especially when we get into the busy citrus season starting in January.

If you're looking for a good home for other gardening, preserving or packaging items, feel free to contact us about those as well.  Other high priority items can be found at ttp://www.villageharvest.org/wishlist.htm

VILLAGE HARVEST TO DATE:        70,816 lbs!

Yes, even though there hasn't been a newsletter, there has been a lot of harvesting going on ~ 25k lbs.  For those who have been looking forward to our newsletter, please forgive me.  I've been quite ill this summer and haven't been able to do as much as usual.
