From: "Village Harvest" To: Subject: Village Harvest - Harvesting in Mt. View 2/23 Date: Monday, February 17, 2003 4:35 PM VILLAGE HARVEST UPDATE: ---------------------------------- In this issue: - Mountain View Community Fruit Harvest in Mountain View - Harvest Totals to Date - Village Harvest Preserves Update - Upcoming Village Harvest Events ------------------------------------------------------------------ MOUNTAIN VIEW COMMUNITY FRUIT HARVEST - 2/23 ------------------------------------------------------------------ In partnership with the young adults division of the of the Jewish Federation, fruit grown in Mountain View will be harvested to feed the hungry, Sunday, February 23rd. We'll be harvesting all types of citrus -- oranges, tangerines, grapefruit & lemons. Please RSVP if you'll be attending so we can plan how many homes we can commit to. Volunteers will meet at 8:30 a.m. at the Mountain View Community Services Agency, 204 Sterlin Road, Mt. View and work until about 12:30pm. The fruit will be distributed by the Mountain View Community Services Agency to people in need right in the Mountain View area, and the Second Harvest Food Bank. Harvesting volunteers will be trained in how to tell which fruit is ripe, equipped, then formed into teams that will carpool to several homes in and around Mountain View. People who can bring trucks, orchard ladders and boxes are also needed. Instructions for volunteers: - Dress with long sleeves and comfortable shoes... Long sleeves are to protect your arms from branches. Bring gloves and hand pruners if you prefer to use them. - Be prepared to drive or carpool from home to home... If you have a large car or truck, it's always appreciated - Feel free to bring a bag to take home fruit for yourself. Tree ripened fruit from Santa Clara Valley... it doesn't get any better than this! HARVEST TOTALS TO DATE: ---------------------------------- Citrus have been coming in early this year. Last year, we had just started the harvesting season in mid-February so everything harvested this year to date is ahead of last year's pace. 2003 HARVEST TO DATE: 7,617 lbs Looking ahead, we've had such a mild winter, there have been reports of fruit trees starting to blossom already. "We've only had 275 of accumulated chill hours this year", according to Andy Mariani of Mariani Orchards. "Blenheim apricots, for example, require about 750 hours to bloom, leaf out and set fruit normally. Bing cherries require more, about 850 at or below 45 degrees. Santa Rosa plum, on the other hand, requires only about 300 hours of chill, so that with a little luck, one can expect it to bloom and set fruit normally." VILLAGE HARVEST PRESERVES UPDATE: ----------------------------------------------------- Thank you everyone who joined in on out "Jammin" team. Our first jam making was postponed due to construction and we're now testing out another kitchen in Palo Alto. If you're still interested in helping out, it's not too late to join in. First up this year will be various marmalades made from oranges, lemons and kumquats sometime in early March.
